TYPHOON HAIYAN/YOLANDA FLATTENS VISAYAS
As you know, Typhoon Haiyan (called "Yolanda" in the Philippines) resulted in the loss of lives and unimaginable material destruction in the Philippines.
International media and aid agencies have focused on the island of Leyte and specifically on the city of Tacloban. This is understandable because this is where the damage has been the greatest.
However, the typhoon made landfall in other regions as well. Next in its path was northern Cebu, the island next to Leyte, where many family members and friends still live.
Bogo is a city of almost 70,000 inhabitants. According to reports, up to 90% of the city has been destroyed, though fatalities were few. Many houses have been flattened.
In the first instance, people are in dire need of food and water, clothing and shelter. The city administration prepared for the storm by storing rice and corn but Haiyan's strong winds ripped open the warehouse's roof and drenched the grain. People have resorted to eating just coconuts.
Most of the people of Bogo depend on small business, agriculture, and fishing. Now the stores are destroyed, sugar cane and coconut trees cut down, and fishing boats destroyed -- but the rebuilding is for tomorrow. Now the people's concern is survival.
If you can assist financially, we will grateful for your help. Whatever you can give will go a long way towards providing for the most basic needs of the victims. If you wish to donate directly to the general relief efforts in the Philippines, please look at CARITAS AUSTRALIA.
However, Caritas cannot guarantee that the money will be allocated directly for Bogo. This is why we are appealing for direct financial aid for Bogo.
The money will be sent to the Alumni Association of the Bogo Holy Family Academy (Class of 1983) who will hand it directly to the Daughters of Charity who run the Holy Family Academy and/or to the parish priest, Monsignor Isidro Ullamot, asking them to purchase supplies for those in need.
Your generosity will be greatly appreciated. Money received through this website, will acknowledge your donation (if you wish) and report on how it will be spent.
The first batch of donations received by Mariza has been sent to the Philippines on Tuesday, 19th November. Further donations will be sent in batches.
